AutoGPT Brief Overview
AutoGPT is an open-source platform for creating, deploying, and managing continuous AI agents—software workers that can run on their own and automate multi‑step workflows. You can self‑host it for free, or join a closed beta waitlist for a hosted version.
How‑to‑use
- Check prerequisites
Install Node.js, Docker, and Git on your machine. - Run the one‑line setup (self‑host)
Mac/Linux:
curl -fsSL https://setup.agpt.co/install.sh -o install.sh && bash install.sh
Windows (PowerShell):
iwr https://setup.agpt.co/install.bat -o install.bat; ./install.bat
This installs dependencies, pulls the project, and starts your local instance.
- Open the web app
Visithttp://localhost:3000, create an account, and you’ll land in the builder UI. - Choose your model source
- Cloud LLMs (OpenAI, Anthropic, Groq, etc.): add your provider keys.
- Local models via Ollama (no cloud API key required): select an Ollama model (e.g.,
llama3.2) and enter any value in the “API key” field.
- Build or pick an agent and run
Use the low‑code Agent Builder to drag‑and‑drop “blocks,” connect steps, and press Run; or start from ready‑made agents.
Optional (CLI): You can also run “AutoGPT Classic” from the command line (
./autogpt.sh run) and expose a UI withserve. Continuous mode is available but not recommended because it can run indefinitely without prompts.
AutoGPT key features & functions
- Low‑code workflows: Visual builder to design multi‑step automations (“agents”) without heavy coding.
- Continuous agents: Deploy agents that keep running and trigger on events, ideal for always‑on tasks.
- Blocks (integrations): Connect external services, data tools, AI models, and custom scripts as modular “blocks.”
- Frontend + Server architecture: Web UI for building/monitoring; server runs agents, includes a marketplace for prebuilt agents.
- Model flexibility: Works with OpenAI, Anthropic, Groq, Llama (via compatible providers) and can run local models through Ollama.
- Monitoring & analytics: Track performance and iterate on your workflows.
Pricing
Local models option: Using Ollama avoids third‑party LLM API charges (you run models on your own hardware).
Self‑hosted:Free to download and run the platform yourself. (Open‑source repo; “Download to self‑host (Free!)”).
Hosted cloud version: Currently in closed beta with a waitlist; no public pricing is listed as of November 5, 2025.
Model usage costs (if using cloud LLMs): You’ll pay your chosen provider’s per‑token fees (e.g., OpenAI/Anthropic/Groq) based on usage; costs vary by model and volume.
