Waveformer - AI Text-to-Music Generator

Waveformer Brief Overview
Waveformer is an open-source web app from Replicate that turns a plain-text prompt into short music clips using the MusicGen model. In simple terms: you describe the vibe (genre, mood, instruments, tempo), choose how many seconds you want, and Waveformer generates a fresh piece of music based on that description.
Waveformer is designed as an easy front-end demo of running AI audio models through Replicate. It focuses on speed and simplicity rather than deep music production controls. Besides generating audio, Waveformer can also be used to save your creation as a waveform-style video (a visual audio waveform animation), which is useful for sharing on social platforms.
Simple How-to-Use
- Open the Waveformer site in your browser.
- In the Prompt field, type what you want to hear.
- Example format: “lo-fi hip hop beat, warm vinyl crackle, mellow chords, 90 BPM”
- Set the clip duration (in seconds).
- Click Make music and wait for the generation to finish.
- Preview the result.
- Save/export your output:
- Download the audio file for editing in your video editor or DAW.
- Or export a waveform video version for quick posting/sharing.
Tip: If the result isn’t close, rewrite the prompt with clearer musical details (genre + instruments + tempo + mood), then regenerate.
Waveformer Key Features and Functions
- Text-to-music generation: Produces music directly from a written prompt (no composing skills required).
- Adjustable length: Set the output duration in seconds for quick loops, stingers, or short background clips.
- Waveform video export: Convert generated audio into a waveform-style video for easy social sharing.
- Open-source project: The app’s code is available, making it useful as a reference if you want to build your own audio-generation interface.
- Powered by Replicate models: Uses MusicGen for audio generation and an audio-to-waveform model for visualization, showcasing how multiple AI models can be chained in a workflow.
Pricing
Waveformer itself is an open-source app, so there’s no separate “Waveformer subscription.” Costs depend on how you run it:
- Using Replicate’s hosted models (pay-as-you-go):
- MusicGen on Replicate costs about $0.084 per run on average (varies by input and runtime).
- Audio-to-waveform costs about $0.00017 per run on average.
- If your workflow generates music and then creates a waveform video, your rough per-result compute cost is approximately the sum of those two runs (still variable in practice).
- Running it yourself:
- You can self-host the app and run models locally (your cost becomes your own infrastructure/compute instead of per-run billing).
