Infinite Drum Machine Brief Overview
The Infinite Drum Machine is a browser-based AI experiment from Google Creative Lab that lets you build drum patterns using “found sounds” (everyday audio snippets) alongside more traditional musical samples. Instead of sorting sounds into folders like a normal sample pack, it uses machine learning to place thousands of audio clips onto a visual “map,” where similar sounds appear near each other.
The result is a playful workflow: you explore a cloud of sound points, pick a small set of samples you like, then program them into a looping step sequencer to make a beat. It’s designed for quick experimentation—great for producers looking for unusual percussion textures, educators teaching rhythm, or anyone who wants to turn surprising sounds into music.
How-to-Use
- Open the Infinite Drum Machine in your web browser (Chrome is recommended for the smoothest experience).
- Click Start Playing to load the sound map and the sequencer.
- Explore the sound map: click around to preview sounds, and move/select the highlighted sound picks to swap in new samples.
- Use the filter/tags search to narrow down sound types and quickly find a vibe (percussive, metallic, vocal-like, etc.).
- Build a beat in the step sequencer by clicking steps on each track to place hits.
- Press Play to loop your pattern (on desktop, the space bar may control play/pause).
- Adjust tempo (BPM) using the metronome/tempo control. Use zoom controls to navigate dense areas of the sound map.
Infinite Drum Machine Key Features and Functions
- ML-organized sound map: Similar sounds are grouped together automatically, making discovery faster than manual browsing.
- Thousands of samples: A large library of everyday sounds, including contributed audio from the Philharmonia Orchestra (London).
- 4-track step sequencer: Create rhythmic loops by sequencing your selected sounds across multiple tracks.
- Tagging + filtering: Helps you locate types of sounds without knowing exactly what you’re looking for.
- Sound descriptions: Surfaces basic context for what you’re hearing as you explore.
- Open-source availability: The project’s codebase is publicly available, making it useful for learning and creative coding inspiration.
Pricing
The Infinite Drum Machine is free to use online. There are no paid tiers shown for the experiment itself, and the project is also available as open-source code.
