AI Text Classifier Brief overview
OpenAI’s AI Text Classifier was a free, experimental tool (released January 31, 2023) that estimated whether a passage was likely AI‑written. On July 20, 2023, OpenAI removed it due to low accuracy. In tests, it labeled only 26% of AI text as “likely AI‑written” and misclassified 9% of human text; performance improved with longer English inputs.
Simple how‑to‑use
- Open the web app.
- Paste longer text (1,000+ characters recommended for best results).
- Review the likelihood label and do not use it as the sole basis for decisions. (Note: the tool is no longer available.)
Key features & functions
- Indicates whether text is likely AI‑written using a fine‑tuned language model trained on paired human/AI samples.
- Reliability increases with longer inputs; recommended primarily for English; unreliable on code and short text.
- Thresholds tuned to keep false positives low, but detections can be evaded; intended only as a complement to other checks.
